Stephen Brown got a community order instead of prison for strangling his partner during a family crisis.
Stephen Brown, 34, a father of three from St Helens, was given a community order instead of prison after admitting to intentionally strangling his partner, Rebecca Jackson, on December 28, 2025, the day before his mother’s funeral.
The incident occurred during an argument as Jackson cleaned up after their sick child, prompting her to plead, “You’re going to kill me.” Police responded to a distress call from Jackson’s mother and found her visibly shaken.
Brown, who has no prior convictions, admitted the assault and expressed remorse in court.
The judge, Recorder Martine Snowdon, cited extreme family stress, Brown’s cooperation, and the risk to his children if jailed as reasons for the exceptional sentence: a 12-month community order, 25 days of rehabilitation activity, and a £100 fine.
The court emphasized that probation support would help address underlying issues and prevent future harm.
