San Diego to vote on taxing vacant second homes to boost housing supply.
A San Diego City Council committee has unanimously approved placing a ballot measure on the June 2 primary election that would tax second homes left vacant for 183 or more days a year.
The tax starts at $8,000 annually in 2027, rising to $10,000 in 2028, with an extra $4,000 surcharge for corporate owners in 2027 and $5,000 in 2028.
The goal is to encourage owners to rent or sell vacant homes, easing the city’s housing shortage.
Exemptions include homes affected by disasters or those of deceased owners.
The city estimates the tax could generate $12.1 million to $23.8 million in its first year, rising to $15.3 million to $30 million in the second year.
The full council will vote on the measure soon.
