flag Oman launches National Library of Oman with royal decree, granting it autonomy and central role in preserving cultural heritage.

Oman has established the National Library of Oman through Royal Decree No. 36/2026, issued by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on February 25, 2026. The library, part of the Sayyid Tarik bin Taimur Cultural Complex in Muscat, gains legal status, financial and administrative autonomy, and reports directly to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth. It assumes all assets, personnel, and responsibilities from the former Manuscripts Department and takes over manuscript-related duties from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. The library aims to preserve Omani cultural heritage, support research, and promote national identity through a comprehensive collection of intellectual and cultural materials.
