Nigeria restricts honorary doctorates to accredited universities, bans officials and self-nominations, and requires public disclosure to protect academic integrity.
Nigeria’s National Universities Commission (NUC) has issued strict new guidelines limiting honorary doctorate degrees to prevent misuse and protect academic integrity. Only accredited universities that have awarded at least one PhD can confer such honors, with no more than three recipients per convocation. Recipients, who must have made exceptional contributions, cannot use the title "Dr." or claim professional authority. Serving public officials and self-nominations are banned, and no fees can be charged. The rules, aligned with national laws and the 2012 Keffi Declaration, require public disclosure of recipients and allow revocation if misconduct occurs. Violations may result in sanctions.
