New Zealand’s military completed a 23-day, refuel-free mission supporting Tokelau’s centenary, rescuing sailors, and upgrading Pacific monitoring systems.
New Zealand’s military completed Operation Calypso, a 23-day, 4,580-nautical-mile mission across the South-West Pacific without refueling, led by HMNZS Canterbury.
The operation supported the Governor-General’s visit to Tokelau, upgraded tsunami and volcano monitoring systems on Raoul Island, and rescued two sailors 105 nautical miles south of Tonga with help from Tongan-speaking crew.
It involved coordinated efforts from the Navy, Army, Air Force, and civilian agencies, including scientific teams and police, and marked the centenary of New Zealand’s administration of Tokelau.
Two Tokelauan Navy members reunited with families, and crews cleared vegetation and supported remote site operations.
Commanding Officer Commander Wayne Andrew commended the mission’s unity and readiness.
