NASA astronaut Mike Fincke's medical issue in Jan 2026 led to the first-ever ISS medical evacuation, ending Crew-11 early.
NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, 58, confirmed he experienced a medical issue in January 2026 during the SpaceX Crew-11 mission, prompting the first-ever medical evacuation from the International Space Station in NASA’s history.
The incident led to the early return of all four crew members, cutting the mission short by about a month and canceling a planned spacewalk.
Fincke, a veteran with 549 days in space, said his condition stabilized quickly with help from crewmates and ground medical teams, and he praised the use of an ultrasound device for in-flight diagnostics.
He is now recovering in Houston, and NASA emphasized crew safety as the top priority.
The nature of the medical event remains undisclosed.
