A Mumbai court acquitted Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in a defamation case over allegations of a ₹100 crore toilet scam, citing public interest and official documents.
A Mumbai Sessions Court has acquitted Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut in a criminal defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
The acquittal reverses a September 2024 conviction by a lower court that had sentenced Raut to 15 days in jail over allegations he made about a ₹100 crore scam involving public toilet construction in Mira-Bhayander.
The sessions court found his statements, based on official documents and public discourse, did not constitute criminal defamation.
Somaiya’s legal team plans to appeal the decision in the Bombay High Court.
