Malawi’s rare earths project cleared for safe, low-cost shipping due to low radiation levels.
Australia’s ANSTO has confirmed that monazite concentrate from Malawi’s Kangankunde rare earths project is exempt from radioactive transport rules under IAEA guidelines, due to low uranium, thorium, and actinium-227 levels.
This means shipments won’t require dangerous goods handling, specialized packaging, or restricted carriers, reducing costs and regulatory hurdles.
The finding supports a low-radiation pathway from ore to final product, aligns with prior testwork showing high rare earth recovery and ultra-low radionuclides, and allows for over 20 years of safe storage.
The clearance is a key de-risking milestone for Lindian Resources, which aims to begin production by late 2026.
