Irish authorities warn parents against unsafe car seat head straps, citing suffocation and injury risks, and urge use of only approved car seats.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has warned Irish parents against using car seat head straps, also known as neck protection belts or nap aids, after finding 100 online listings on platforms like Amazon and Shein with no verifiable safety data.
The products, marketed to prevent head drooping during sleep, pose serious risks including suffocation, strangulation, and spinal injury in a crash.
All listings were removed, and the CCPC, along with the HSE and Road Safety Authority, stresses that child car seats are already rigorously tested and that adding unapproved accessories can compromise safety.
Similar products have been recalled in Malta, Germany, and Australia.
Parents are advised to use only properly fitted, manufacturer-approved car seats without additional devices and to report any such products seen online or in stores.
