India's transport minister questions Delhi's green tax, saying funds aren't used for pollution control and urges its replacement.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has questioned the continued collection of Delhi’s Environment Compensation Charge (ECC), saying funds from the 2015 Supreme Court-mandated green tax on commercial vehicles are not being used for pollution control, public transport, or pedestrian infrastructure.
Speaking at an India Today event, he cited a ministry review showing no evidence of intended environmental spending by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), criticized the MCD for using the fee as a revenue source, and urged the Delhi government to stop the charge.
He proposed replacing it with direct grants of ₹800–900 crore and called on the Supreme Court to revisit its order, citing concerns over the tax’s effectiveness and fairness to transport operators.
