India's Supreme Court orders government and election body to respond by April 27 on limiting party election spending.
The Supreme Court has directed the Indian government and Election Commission to respond by April 27 to a public interest litigation seeking a legal cap on political party election spending.
The petition, filed by Common Cause through advocate Prashant Bhushan, argues that while individual candidates face expenditure limits, parties have no such restrictions, undermining fair elections and enabling disproportionate financial influence.
The court’s move follows concerns over unregulated funding, including anonymous donations previously struck down in a 2024 ruling, and the potential for circumvention through private contributions.
The matter will be heard six weeks after the notice.
