India will require E20 petrol—20% ethanol—nationwide starting April 1, 2026, to cut oil imports, cut emissions, and aid farmers.
Starting April 1, 2026, India will mandate the nationwide sale of E20 petrol—containing up to 20% ethanol and meeting a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95—aimed at reducing crude oil imports, lowering emissions, and supporting farmers.
The move, part of a broader biofuel strategy, builds on India’s earlier achievement of 10% ethanol blending in 2022 and accelerates the 20% target from 2030 to 2026.
Most vehicles made from 2023 onward are compatible, while older models may see a 3–7% drop in fuel efficiency and minor component wear.
The RON 95 standard ensures engine protection, improves combustion stability, and enhances performance.
The policy aligns with India’s energy security and environmental goals, with the government reporting over Rs 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange savings since 2014–15.
Limited regional exemptions may be granted.
