H5N1 bird flu kills seal pups, closing California park tours.
A bird flu outbreak caused by the H5N1 virus has led to the cancellation of seal-watching tours and closure of viewing areas at Año Nuevo State Park in California after seven elephant seal pups tested positive, marking the first confirmed case in marine mammals in the state.
Researchers from UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis detected the virus following reports of sick and dead seals in early February, with testing ongoing on about 30 more animals.
The highly pathogenic virus, which has caused mass deaths in birds and marine mammals globally, poses a low risk to humans, but officials urge the public to avoid contact with seals and keep pets away to prevent potential spread.
