A Chinese drone spoofed aircraft identities in the South China Sea, raising concerns over deceptive military tactics.
A Chinese military drone, identified as YILO4200, has conducted at least 23 flights since August 2025 over the South China Sea, using false transponder signals to mimic other aircraft, including a sanctioned Belarusian cargo plane, a British fighter jet, and a North Korean passenger jet, according to a Reuters analysis of flight-tracking data.
The drone, based in Hainan, flew complex, long-duration patterns near disputed areas like the Paracel Islands and Vietnam’s coast, and also appeared in northwest China, posing as a small executive jet.
Experts say the operations represent a significant escalation in China’s grey-zone tactics, likely testing electronic deception for potential military or propaganda purposes, though the ruses are unlikely to fool military radar.
The Chinese defense ministry did not respond to inquiries.
