The ABC pulled an Australian Story episode about Ian Williams after learning he hid a 1993 assault conviction, undermining the program’s credibility.
The ABC pulled an episode of Australian Story featuring 73-year-old Ian Williams just before broadcast after learning he had a 1993 indecent assault conviction he failed to disclose.
The episode, which highlighted his $1,338 scam by UBank and his $379 million lawsuit over 5.5% of his pension, had cost about $100,000 to produce.
Though his case was dismissed, NAB later apologized and refunded the money.
The ABC said the undisclosed conviction undermined the program’s credibility and violated editorial standards, leading to the removal of the episode, promotional materials, and a prior 37-minute report.
Williams admitted to concealing his past and apologized for misleading the broadcaster and wasting public funds.
