Yunxian Man fossils, dated to 1.77 million years ago, are now the oldest hominin remains in eastern Asia, reshaping understanding of early human migration.
A new study re-dates Homo erectus fossils from Yunxian, China, to about 1.77 million years ago, making them the oldest known hominin remains in eastern Asia and pushing back the arrival of early humans in the region by nearly 600,000 years.
Using cosmogenic nuclide dating on quartz grains, researchers determined the age of the sediment layer where three skulls—known as "Yunxian Man"—were found.
The findings, published in Science Advances, challenge previous migration timelines, suggest earlier dispersal out of Africa, and support the idea that Homo erectus reached East Asia earlier than thought.
The study also rules out a connection to Denisovans due to timing and highlights the region’s importance in human evolution.
