A 23-year-old Irish ex-soldier got a suspended sentence for sharing child abuse images and videos, including of infants and pre-teens.
A 23-year-old former Irish soldier from Limerick, Cormac Browne, received a suspended sentence after admitting to possessing and sharing extreme child sexual abuse material, including images of infants and pre-teens, and engaging in explicit video chats with minors.
The case emerged in April 2023 after a tip from the U.S.-based International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children led to a raid on Browne’s home, where Gardaí seized electronic devices containing four images and two videos of child exploitation.
Browne initially claimed he was unaware of the material’s nature but later admitted to using it for sexual gratification and expressed remorse.
Judge Simon McAleese condemned the crimes as “depraved” and a betrayal of Browne’s duty as a soldier, noting the severity despite his youth, lack of prior convictions, and cooperation.
A suspended sentence was imposed, with Browne ordered to undergo a community suitability assessment as part of rehabilitation.
