The UK relaunched its Sustainable Farming Incentive in Feb 2026 with simplified rules, payment caps, and new funding to boost environmental outcomes.
The UK government has relaunched the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) with reforms including reducing eligible actions from 102 to 71, capping annual payments at £100,000 per farm, and shortening agreement lengths to three years.
Announced by Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds at the NFU conference on 24 February 2026, the changes aim to improve fairness, simplify access for small and tenant farmers, and redirect funds toward environmental outcomes.
A £345 million package includes £70 million for innovation, £50 million for equipment, and up to £225 million in capital grants for environmental infrastructure.
The scheme opens in June for small farms and September for all others.
While welcomed by the NFU and tenant groups, concerns remain over long-term funding stability and the impact of the cap on large-scale conservation efforts.
