A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed near the Istanbul-Izmir highway in Balikesir province early Wednesday, February 25, 2026, shortly after takeoff from the 9th Main Jet Base.
The pilot, identified as Major İbrahim Bolat, died in the crash, according to Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense.
The aircraft lost contact with air traffic control around 12:56 a.m. local time, and wreckage was found in the Karesi district.
Emergency crews responded, temporarily closing part of the highway.
An investigation into the cause is underway, with no details released.
