The case, known as the "suitcase murder," drew international attention and involved his then-pregnant girlfriend, Heather Mack, who was sentenced to 10 years in Indonesia and later received a 26-year U.S. sentence for conspiracy to murder.
Schaefer apologized to the victim’s family, taking full responsibility.
Indonesian authorities cited the crime’s severity and public order concerns in approving his deportation.
