South Carolina lawmakers advance a bill requiring shrimp to be labeled with its country of origin to combat widespread mislabeling.
South Carolina lawmakers have advanced a bill requiring shrimp sold or served in the state to be clearly labeled with its country of origin, following a probe that found widespread mislabeling, including 75% of Myrtle Beach restaurants falsely advertising imported shrimp as local.
The legislation, backed by shrimpers and consumer advocates, aims to ensure transparency, protect domestic fishermen, and combat seafood fraud.
If passed, violations could result in fines and up to six months in jail.
The bill now moves to the full House for consideration.
