A single Oriental fruit fly found in Auckland has triggered a biosecurity alert and movement restrictions on fresh produce.
A single male Oriental fruit fly was found in a surveillance trap in Papatoetoe, South Auckland, triggering a biosecurity response by Biosecurity New Zealand.
The discovery, part of a national monitoring program using nearly 8,000 traps, has led to increased trapping and inspections, with legal restrictions on moving fresh fruit and vegetables out of the area expected within 24 hours.
Residents are advised not to transport whole produce from their properties.
The fly, native to Asia and capable of infesting over 300 plant species, poses no human health risk but could severely damage New Zealand’s horticulture sector if established.
The incident is unrelated to a recent Queensland fruit fly eradication in Mt Roskill.
Authorities urge the public to report suspected sightings via the MPI Pest and Diseases Hotline.
