Ontario’s family health teams are warning that the province’s goal of connecting all residents to primary care by 2029 is at risk due to a worsening staffing crisis.
Despite government investments, pay for nurses, nurse practitioners, and other health workers has not kept pace with inflation or hospital wages, leading many to leave for better-paying roles, especially in rural and northern areas.
The Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario is urging $430 million over five years to close the wage gap and release $115 million in committed funding, stressing that without stable staffing and fair compensation, access to timely, comprehensive care will remain limited.
