Neil Trennan, 61, has been sentenced to a third life term for attacking a student in Sheffield while on unsupervised day release from HMP North Sea Camp.
The court heard he followed the woman into her home in July 2025, attacked her with a knife, and was stopped when she locked herself in the bathroom.
Trennan, already serving two life sentences for a 1991 rape and a 2002 assault, admitted to being aroused by violence and enjoying non-consensual sex.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC condemned the decision to release him under open conditions, calling it unwise and emphasizing Trennan remains a severe and ongoing threat to women.
He imposed a minimum term of 10 years and referred the case to the Lord Chancellor for review.
