Nathan Boulter, 36, was sentenced to life in prison with a 17-year non-parole period for the July 2025 stabbing murder of his ex-partner Chantal McDonald, 37, in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Boulter, who had a history of violent offenses against women and had been released from prison just 13 days prior, attacked McDonald with a 19cm knife as she returned home with her two children.
He had harassed her with hundreds of threatening calls and messages.
Boulter pleaded guilty and appeared via video link during sentencing, not in person, drawing criticism.
McDonald’s family described lasting trauma, grief, and loss of safety.
Police confirmed they were not notified of the harassment, and Corrections launched a review.
