Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat rail siding, the first global project to earn carbon credits by shifting vehicle transport from road to rail, has reduced emissions by 170,000 tonnes since 2023.
Maruti Suzuki India’s in-plant railway siding in Gujarat has become the world’s first transportation project to earn carbon credits under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard by shifting vehicle deliveries from road to rail.
Since launching in March 2023, the project has transported over 600,000 vehicles, reducing emissions by about 170,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over a 10-year period.
The initiative, part of India’s GatiShakti program and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024, uses a UN-approved methodology and supports climate action, reduced road congestion, and lower fuel use.
A second, larger siding opened in Manesar in June 2025.
