M23 commander Willy Ngoma killed in Congolese drone strike near Rubaya on Feb. 24, 2026, during heightened conflict in coltan-rich region.
Willy Ngoma, the M23 rebel group’s military spokesperson, was killed in a Congolese army drone strike near Rubaya, North Kivu, around 3 a.m. on February 24, 2026.
The attack occurred amid intensified fighting and sustained drone operations in a key coltan-mining region supplying about 15% of the world’s coltan.
Ngoma, under EU sanctions since December 2022, was a prominent figure in the Rwanda-backed M23, which controls large parts of North and South Kivu.
The strike undermines ongoing Qatar-mediated ceasefire talks, including a Doha agreement for a joint monitoring mechanism involving Qatar, the U.S., and the African Union.
The Congolese presidency declined to comment, and the army did not respond to requests for information.
