A Los Angeles man was jailed for 45 days after giving alcohol to a protected hawk, facing probation, counseling, and a ban on animals and guns.
Cesar Gustavo Diaz, 25, of Los Angeles, was sentenced to 45 days in jail—credit for time served—12 months of probation, 20 days of community labor, and a $220 fine after pleading no contest to misdemeanor animal cruelty and wildlife capture charges.
The offense stemmed from a June 2025 video showing Diaz giving alcohol to a juvenile Cooper’s hawk, a protected species under federal and state law, at Amelia Mayberry Park in South Whittier.
Diaz, a convicted felon already in custody on unrelated charges, was identified through public tips and a five-warrant investigation.
He must complete 24 sessions of animal cruelty counseling, is banned from owning animals for five years, and cannot possess firearms for a decade.
