Japanese researchers from Kyoto University have unveiled "Buddharoid," an AI-powered robot monk designed to offer spiritual guidance using Buddhist teachings.
Built on a Chinese-made Unitree G1 platform and equipped with the BuddhaBotPlus AI system, the faceless, grey-robed robot can hold conversations, perform prayer-like gestures, and respond to sensitive personal questions.
Developed by Professor Seiji Kumagai, it aims to address shortages of human monks in Japan’s aging society.
While not intended to replace clergy, the robot represents a step toward integrating AI into religious practice, raising ethical questions about technology’s role in spirituality.
