Kaziranga National Park recorded a new high of 105,540 migratory water birds across 107 species in January 2026, underscoring its critical role on the Central Asian Flyway.
A survey in Kaziranga National Park, Assam, recorded 105,540 migratory water birds from 107 species during January 4–11, 2026, the highest count to date in the seventh annual waterbird estimation. The survey, covering 166 wetlands, identified key species like Bar-headed Geese and Northern Pintails, along with several globally threatened birds. It confirmed Kaziranga’s role as a vital stopover on the Central Asian Flyway and highlighted the importance of both seasonal and perennial wetlands. The effort, supported by Numaligarh Refinery Ltd’s CSR program, involves citizen scientists and aids conservation and wetland management.
