A judge blocked the Justice Department from unreviewed searches of reporter Hannah Natanson’s devices, citing First Amendment concerns.
A federal judge has blocked the Justice Department from conducting an unsupervised search of electronic devices seized from Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson during a national security investigation into a Pentagon contractor accused of leaking classified information.
Judge William Porter ruled that a broad, unrestricted review of her digital work product—including phones, laptops, and recording devices—violates First Amendment rights by threatening press freedom and confidential source protections.
Instead, the judge will personally review the materials to identify only relevant evidence, rejecting the government’s proposal for a filter team.
The devices were taken in a January 14 raid on Natanson’s home, and the case has drawn national attention over tensions between national security probes and journalistic integrity.
