Ghana opens $250M glass factory to cut imports, boost exports and create jobs.
President John Dramani Mahama has launched a $250 million float glass factory in Shama, Ghana, part of a broader industrial push to reduce imports and boost exports.
The facility, set to produce up to 1,400 tonnes of glass daily at full capacity, aims to cut Ghana’s $25 million annual glass imports and generate nearly $100 million in exports yearly.
Alongside the glass plant, a sanitary ware factory was commissioned and a ceramic tile production line expanded, now producing 200,000 square meters daily with 60% exported.
The investor paid 740 million Ghana cedis in taxes in 2025, with projections exceeding one billion cedis annually.
The projects are expected to create over 2,000 direct jobs and thousands more indirectly, supported by local skills training.
Mahama emphasized that industrialization, tax revenue, and export growth are key to economic stability and national development.
