Gerry Hutch, on bail in Spain, urges Dublin Central voters to register for May’s byelection, citing low turnout as a threat to democracy.
Gerry Hutch, a 62-year-old Dublin man on bail in Spain over alleged money laundering, is urging residents in Dublin Central to register to vote ahead of a May byelection.
In a social media video, he emphasized that non-registration means having no political voice, claiming the current government may benefit from low turnout.
Hutch, who received over 3,000 votes in the 2024 general election but lost, said many in his community don’t vote due to lack of candidates or late registration.
He encouraged people, especially older and less tech-savvy individuals, to register now, stressing it’s a civic duty and essential for future change.
The byelection follows Paschal Donohoe’s resignation to join the World Bank.
