Four people were sentenced in London for a text message scam targeting Tube passengers using homemade devices to send fake delivery alerts, tricking victims into sharing banking details.
The fraud, active from January to March 2025, involved tens of thousands of messages and led to £600,000 being laundered through gift cards, primarily by Gatis Lauks, who earned £30,000 in commission.
Zhijia Fan, described as the ringleader, received a four-year, eight-month prison sentence after benefiting over £100,000.
The operation was uncovered after an off-duty police officer spotted suspicious equipment at King’s Cross station.
Another suspect remains at large.
