Finland’s Pekka Haavisto appointed UN envoy for Sudan to help end conflict and humanitarian crisis.
The United Nations has appointed Pekka Haavisto of Finland as its new Personal Envoy for Sudan, succeeding Ramtane Lamamra of Algeria.
Haavisto, a former Finnish foreign minister with over 40 years of diplomatic experience, brings extensive expertise in mediation and crisis management, including prior roles as EU Special Representative for Sudan and UN senior adviser during the Darfur peace process.
His appointment aims to strengthen international efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces, which has caused over 13 million displaced people and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.
