On Feb. 24, 2026, a Tennessee National Guard helicopter rescued a hiker with severe cold injuries from a remote park area.
On February 24, 2026, a Tennessee Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter rescued a hiker with severe cold-weather injuries in a remote area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park near the North Carolina border.
The mission began after the hiker activated an emergency SOS via a Garmin inReach device at the Double Springs Gap Shelter.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency coordinated the response, launching the helicopter from Joint Base McGhee-Tyson at approximately 9:30 a.m. A flight paramedic was lowered to the site, provided emergency care, and helped hoist the patient into the aircraft.
The hiker was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment and arrived around 10:25 a.m. Park rangers maintained contact with the hiker during the operation.
The helicopter returned to base near Louisville by 11:00 a.m.
