Cardinals warn SSPX: ordaining bishops without pope’s approval is schismatic and triggers excommunication.
In February 2026, Cardinals Gerhard Müller and Robert Sarah warned the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) against ordaining bishops on July 1 without papal approval, calling the move a schismatic act that threatens Church unity.
They emphasized that true communion requires submission to Pope Leo XIV’s authority, citing canon law and Church tradition.
The SSPX, which rejects post-Vatican II reforms and maintains irregular status, has declined Vatican dialogue offers and insists its actions preserve tradition.
The planned ordinations would trigger automatic excommunication under Church law, echoing the 1988 consecrations that led to Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre’s excommunication.
The Society has not responded to the cardinals’ appeals.
