Canada starts building its first Indigenous-led healing space at a Winnipeg children’s hospital, funded by donations and government support.
Construction has begun on Canada’s first Indigenous-led healing space at HSC Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg, a 2,000-square-foot facility designed to provide culturally safe care for Indigenous children and families.
Led by Métis pediatric surgeon Dr. Melanie Morris and guided by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members, the space will include areas for ceremonies, Indigenous language resources, and technology to connect patients with remote communities.
Funded through donations and a $500,000 government contribution, the $2.2 million project supports reconciliation efforts and aligns with national calls to action.
It is expected to be completed in about a year, with additional funding still needed.
