Canada pledges $2B military aid to Ukraine, extends training mission, and imposes sanctions as war enters fifth year.
Canada has pledged $2 billion in new military aid to Ukraine, including over 400 armored vehicles, as the war enters its fifth year, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced expanded sanctions targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil-carrying vessels and 51 individuals and entities, aligning with G7 efforts to lower the price cap on Russian crude to $44.10 per barrel. Canada also extended its military training mission, Operation UNIFIER, through 2029 and committed $20 million to infrastructure rebuilding. The total Canadian support since 2022 now stands at $23.5 billion. Carney stated Russia is failing militarily, strategically, and economically, reaffirming Canada’s long-term commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
