YouTube exec says platform aimed to serve users, not addict them, in youth mental health trial.
YouTube executive Cristos Goodrow testified in a Los Angeles trial that the platform’s goal was to deliver value to users, not to create addictive behavior, as the case examines whether YouTube and Meta designed features to maximize screen time and harm youth mental health.
Goodrow denied intent to exploit users, saying excessive scrolling indicated a failing recommendation system, and highlighted tools like view timers and break prompts.
The trial, centering on plaintiff Kaley G.M., a 20-year-old who began using YouTube at age six, could set a legal precedent for thousands of similar lawsuits.
Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously expressed regret over Instagram’s handling of underage users, while TikTok and Snapchat settled before trial.
Testimony continues through late March.
