A 17-year-old girl died from a rare E. coli-related illness after being misdiagnosed with food poisoning.
A 17-year-old girl, Lois Francis, died at Royal Stoke University Hospital after developing haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a rare and severe condition caused by a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection.
She was hospitalized six days before her death with symptoms initially thought to be food poisoning.
The inquest on February 23, 2026, confirmed the infection led to multi-organ failure.
HUS affects only about two in 100,000 people annually in Europe and the U.S.
Her family honored her as kind, creative, and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community during the hearing.
