Western Australia has unveiled a $140 million 2026 Winter Strategy to combat a record-breaking flu season, including expanded hospital bed capacity, free RSV and flu vaccines for high-risk groups, and a pilot program for 24/7 elderly patient monitoring.
The plan features the acquisition of St John of God Mount Lawley Hospital to add over 200 public beds, a $24.5 million investment in the Time to Think program to reduce hospital stays for older patients, and expanded access to needle-free FluMist vaccines for children.
The strategy also includes free flu shots for ages 12–64 and improved coordination between public and private health providers to ease winter pressures.
