A UN peacekeeping team began a four-day assessment in Uvira, DR Congo, from February 23 to 27, 2026, to evaluate conditions for a joint ceasefire monitoring mechanism.
The mission, led by MONUSCO and the ICGLR, aims to assess security, access, logistics, and local engagement following a 2025 Doha ceasefire agreement with the M23 rebel group.
Uvira, recaptured by government forces in January 2026, is now the provincial center after being seized by M23 in February 2025.
The effort is preliminary, with no commitment to future deployment, pending security guarantees and agreed parameters.
