flag A UK baby, Hugo Powell, is born via womb transplant from a deceased donor, a first for the country and a breakthrough for women with uterine infertility.

Hugo Powell, born in December 2025 at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London, is the first baby in the UK to be born from a womb transplant using an organ from a deceased donor, marking a major milestone in reproductive medicine. His mother, Grace Bell, born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, had no womb and had previously considered surrogacy. After joining the Womb Transplant UK programme, she received the transplant and became pregnant via IVF. The successful birth, delivered by Caesarean section, is only the third such case in Europe and offers new hope for women with uterine infertility. Bell expressed deep gratitude to the donor and her family, whose selfless gift also saved lives through other organ donations. The procedure, part of a research trial, highlights the potential of deceased donor transplants to expand access to biological motherhood.
