Supreme Court blocks evictions for 27K Haldwani residents, mandates PMAY rehabilitation starting March 18.
The Supreme Court has denied a stay on evictions for over 27,000 people near Haldwani Railway Station in Uttarakhand but ordered the state to rehabilitate them through the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY).
The court directed authorities to treat residents as "occupants," not "encroachers," and mandated the distribution of PMAY forms, family-wise eligibility assessments, and rehabilitation camps starting March 18.
The Uttarakhand State Legal Services Authority was tasked with organizing outreach efforts, including door-to-door campaigns, with support from counsellors and social activists.
A detailed eligibility report must be submitted by March 31, and the court reserved the right to consider alternative solutions for those found ineligible.
