South Africa has urged the UN to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and recognize Palestinian statehood, calling on the international community to halt what it describes as efforts to permanently displace Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola made the appeal at the UN Human Rights Council, linking the Palestinian struggle to South Africa’s anti-apartheid history and condemning Israel’s military actions following Hamas’s October 7 attack, which killed about 1,200 Israelis.
Since then, over 72,000 Palestinians have been reported killed in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
South Africa has filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, a move that has strained relations with the United States, which opposes unilateral recognition of Palestine and continues to support Israel.
Despite tensions, many countries, including China, France, Canada, and Russia, already recognize Palestinian statehood.
