Sault Ste. Marie council urges Ontario to stop closing LifeLabs’ Sudbury lab to protect northern healthcare access and jobs.
Sault Ste.
Marie city council has unanimously urged the Ontario government to halt the planned closure of LifeLabs’ Sudbury lab, set for spring 2026, warning the move could disrupt vital medical testing for Northern Ontario.
The lab serves urban, rural, and remote communities, and its relocation to the Greater Toronto Area risks delays, sample spoilage, and retesting, especially impacting patients with chronic illnesses, newborns, and long-term care residents.
Council members stressed the threat to healthcare access and regional workforce stability, citing the loss of about 40 local jobs.
The resolution calls on the provincial government to ensure continued, reliable lab services in the north and will be shared with provincial officials, health organizations, and municipal associations.
El Sault Ste. El consejo de Marie insta a Ontario a dejar de cerrar el laboratorio LifeLabs Sudbury para proteger el acceso y los empleos de atención médica en el norte.
