Russia investigates Telegram's founder over alleged terrorism support, citing app's refusal to remove extremist content.
According to the state-run newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Russia is investigating Telegram founder Pavel Durov for allegedly aiding terrorist activities under Part 1.1 of Article 205.1 of its Criminal Code.
The investigation comes after years of tension between Russian authorities and Telegram, which has denied hosting illegal content or being compromised by foreign intelligence.
Russia has blocked access to the app, citing a failure to remove extremist content, and is promoting its state-sponsored alternative, MAX.
Telegram, which has more than a billion users worldwide, has not commented on the investigation.
