Rep. Tony Gonzales faces scrutiny after text messages reveal he asked a former aide for explicit photos before her 2025 suicide, which he denies.
Text messages obtained by The Texas Tribune show U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, asked former aide Regina Santos-Aviles for explicit photos in May 2024, shortly before her death by suicide in September 2025.
The messages, shared by her widower Adrian Aviles, depict Gonzales persisting despite her objections, describing himself as “a visual person” and inquiring about her “favorite position.” Gonzales denies an affair, calls the claims false, and accuses Aviles of blackmail, while blaming his opponent, Brandon Herrera, for politicizing the issue.
The House ethics committee is reviewing the matter, and the timing—weeks before Gonzales’ March 2026 primary—has raised concerns about conduct and power imbalances.
No criminal charges have been filed.
