PQ wins Chicoutimi byelection, boosting sovereignty push ahead of 2030 referendum.
Quebec's Parti Québécois won a byelection in Chicoutimi, its fourth straight victory, with candidate Marie-Karlynn Laflamme leading by nearly 3,000 votes.
The seat, previously held by the CAQ, had been vacant since former cabinet minister Andrée Laforest left politics.
The win strengthens the PQ ahead of the fall provincial election, as leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon pledges a sovereignty referendum by 2030 if elected.
The CAQ is in a leadership race following Premier François Legault’s announcement to step down, and the Quebec Liberals recently chose Charles Milliard as their new leader.
Meanwhile, Quebec NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice is considering running provincially for Québec Solidaire, which could trigger a federal byelection.
